Clarence Drive – the most scenic drive in the world (well we think so!)
Where Mountains Meet Ocean…..
Clarence Drive is the 30 mile stretch of road (the R44), which hugs the coastline between Gordons Bay and Kleinmond in the Western Cape. It is regarded as one of the most scenic drives in the world. Here at Big Skies Guest House, we think it is THE most scenic drive in the world! Steep majestic mountains meet beautiful blue ocean, and the result is simply breathtaking.
The sheer scale of the Hottentots Holland mountains and their closeness to the sea makes this mountain pass so unique. Visitors, if they are lucky, can also see whales, seals and dolphins whilst touring Clarence Drive.
And lets not forget the Chacma Baboons who live in the mountains – no drive is complete without meeting some of these local residents.
There are many viewing points along the way, so you can pull over and take photos, or simply just sit and take in the magical scenery. Clarence Drive is also a must for bike enthusiasts.
What are you waiting for??
History of Clarence Drive
Although in use since the 17th century, no road development took place along this stretch of coast until the 19th century. In the 1930s three businessmen acquired several farms with a view to developing a new township, Betty’s Bay. Jack Clarence was one of these men, and it is him after whom the road is named.
To develop the township Jack needed a route to get from Somerset West to Betty’s Bay. This was shortly after the start of World War II, and Jack realised utilising prisoners of war would save time and money. So 63 000 Italian prisoners of war were tasked with building Clarence Drive. The Italians were treated well and finished the road construction quickly. Clarence Drive was upgraded in 1998 becoming the the top class, super smooth road it is today.
